Superstars: The Pink Paint Project

With Minke who lives in Chesterfield and enjoys getting involved in the local community.

Minke wanted to get involved in an NCS social action project. So, after coming together with a group of other young volunteers, the Pink Paint Project was born!

What is the Pink Paint Project?

My group and I wanted to spread positive spirits in our local community and raise awareness about where people can find help for mental health issues. So we started the Pink Paint Project. We spent the day painting canvases and adding the helpline number of the Samaritans onto them. Then we hung the canvases up in shops and community centres around Chesterfield.

We also did a bake sale, in order to raise funds and awareness for the Samaritans. We raised £268!

What inspired the Pink Paint Project?

It was inspired by Paddington 2! The colour Baker-Miller Pink is shown to temporarily reduce hostile, violent or aggressive behaviour, so that’s why we used this colour paint.

Why did you choose this cause?

We wanted to raise awareness of mental health issues, which is such an important cause as so many young people struggle with it.

Did you work with local organisations?

We partnered with Samaritans, displaying their helpline on each canvas.  All profits from the bake sale went directly to Samaritans.

What were your hopes going into the project?

I hoped that this project will help those struggling, by displaying these positive canvases with helplines on them — which can save lives!

What did you find most challenging?

I found some activities were slightly out of my comfort zone, which felt challenging. But I had the best time, I took part in everything and I'm so glad I did because I now have incredible memories.

What did you most enjoy?

I definitely enjoyed meeting new people and making memories, as I have made some incredible friends which will stay with me for life. I learned to take risks and I’d say this was a life-changing experience.

How did the project impact your community?

Our pink canvases helped to spread positive spirits in our local community and raise awareness about where people can find help for mental health issues. Overall the canvases helped to brighten up our local area!
